Low stressed functional diamond films

چکیده
Advantages Technology allows for improved diamond deposition process, which results in stronger adhesion. Improved adhesion of the film produces lower stresses to thereby increase the drill lifetime. When compared to untreated drill bit, our drill bit was able to drill over 100 holes, whereas the untreated only drilled 40 holes before breaking. o Increased durability over 50% Diamond films on Cobalt-Cemented Tungsten Carbide Twist Drills There is a thermal mismatch of diamond films on cobaltcemented tungsten carbide (Co-WC) drills that leads to high stress. This mismatch occurs due to the poor adhesion of the film. Diamond coatings are desired due to high hardness and low friction, but suffer from adhesion problems, residual stresses, and a thickness threshold. Our unique method allows for an engineering design of drill edge geometry to allow diamond films to be deposited with low stress. Inventor:

Low temperature internal friction of diamond-like carbon films
We have studied the internal friction of amorphous diamond-like carbon films prepared by pulsed-laser deposition from 0.4 to 300K. The low temperature internal friction below 10K is dominated by the atomic tunnelling states for amorphous solids, which is a measure of structure disorder. We have tried to vary the content of sp carbon atoms versus sp ones by changing laser fleunce, by doping with...
متن کاملMorphological Characterization of Combustion Deposited Diamond Crystals and Films
Single crystals and polycrystalline diamond films of several thicknesses were deposited using oxygen/acetylene combustion flame technique. The substrate used was pure polycrystalline molybdenum subjected to mechanical polishing. Quality and microstructural characteristic of diamond produced were investigated using X-Ray diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy, Scanning and Transmission Electron Microsc...
متن کاملStress and Moisture Effects on Thin Film Buckling Delamination
Deposition processes control the properties of thin films; they can also introduce high residual stresses, which can be relieved by delamination and fracture. Tungsten films with high 1–2 GPa compressive residual stresses were sputter deposited on top of thin (below 100 nm) copper and diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. Highly stressed films store large amounts of strain energy. When the strain en...
متن کاملCryogenic vacuum tribology of diamond and diamond-like carbon films
Friction measurements have been performed on microcrystalline, ultrananocrystalline, and diamond-like carbon DLC films with natural diamond counterfaces in the temperature range of 8 K to room temperature. All films exhibit low friction 0.1 in air at room temperature. In ultrahigh vacuum, microcrystalline diamond quickly wears into a high friction state 0.6 , which is independent of temperature...
متن کاملNovel Adhesion Test for Environmentally Assisted Fracture in Thin Films
Thin films, used in various applications and devices, must strongly adhere to their substrates. Due to various processing and storage environments that devices can be exposed to, water may be introduced into the system. If residual stresses are present in a thin film, delamination propagation can be driven by water without the assistance of an externally applied mechanical force. It is extremel...
